Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Kaguya wakes and heads out. Hotaru meets up with her. The two head out, where Hotaru notes Kaguya doesn’t look well. Kaguya admits to experiencing a bad dream, but doesn’t want to discuss it. As such, Hotaru says she’ll start yelling stuff about Kaguya if Kaguya doesn’t spill the beans.

Kaguya says her dream was unimportant. However, she mentions the dream was about a girl who gave up everything, including her life, to save a planet from invaders. Hotaru is impressed, but Kaguya finds it all stupid. The girl in her dream could have ruled the world, but she gave it up. Kaguya doesn’t understand why anyone would give up everything for love.

After hearing this, Hotaru says that the girl should be given some kind of reward for protecting everyone. After a moment, Kaguya agrees.

Thoughts/Review:

Hata-sensei does something interesting with Kaguya in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 207.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 207

Kaguya is Kaguya

I’ve long theorized that present day Kaguya is the same person as Kaguya from history. Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 207 does show the connection between the two runs deeper than just character designs. Basically, Hata-sensei is stating that his version of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter was present day Kaguya’s memory-dream.

We saw in the past, Kaguya disintegrated. And yet modern Kaguya knows everything that happened in the past, though with a detachment of feelings and such. Despite this, she reacted when Hotaru says the girl in Kaguya’s dream deserved a reward. To me, this seems to indicate that at least in part, Kaguya of the present is Kaguya from the past.

While Kaguya could be a reincarnation, I tend to suspect that when Tsukasa was given the elixir, Kaguya was brought back to life. But much as Tsukasa lost a piece of herself (lost memories) when she was “reborn”, Kaguya did as well. Instead of losing memories, Kaguya lost emotions. One can see this in her relationship with her friends. While they may be friends, there’s still a wall of separation between them.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Before I wrap up my review of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 207, let me post a couple of final thoughts.

  • Within Kaguya’s apartment are a ton of books piled up on the floor. What is she researching?
  • Kaguya’s apartment has an exterior door, leading to an exterior stairway. I’m sure this apartment building is a real one. However, Kaguya appeared to be exiting an apartment complex with an interior access. That didn’t make sense to me.

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 207 was an interesting and enjoyable way of doing an aftermath story of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
